Marantz 2500 Stereo Receiver — 250W Flagship, Fully Reconditioned

Marantz 2500 — Fully Reconditioned by Columbus Radio, Winnipeg This is not a tired survivor. This is a Marantz 2500 brought back to factory specification — fully reconditioned, tested to rated power, and signed off by the technicians at Columbus Radio, one of Winnipeg's most respected and longest-established electronics service centres. Every channel verified. Every function confirmed. Ready to be connected and played. The Receiver Introduced in 1976, the Marantz 2500 was the flagship of the company's legendary 25-series and stood as the most powerful receiver Marantz ever produced in the classic era. Rated at 250 watts per channel into 8 ohms — continuous, both channels driven — it dwarfed virtually everything available at retail. At a time when 100 watts was considered formidable, the 2500 was in a category of one. Its chassis weighed in at approximately 65 lbs and measured nearly 24 inches wide, earning it the name collectors still use today: the Behemoth. It was built during the final years of Marantz's Japanese manufacturing period, before the brand changed hands and character. The fit, finish, and engineering reflect a standard that has never been equalled at this price point in the decades since. The illuminated faceplate — now re-lit with new LED lighting as part of this restoration — remains one of the most striking pieces of industrial design in the history of consumer electronics. Specifications Rated output power: 250W RMS per channel, both channels driven, 8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz Total harmonic distortion: 0.05% at rated power Intermodulation distortion: 0.05% at rated power Frequency response: 10Hz – 70kHz (+0, -3dB) Signal-to-noise ratio: 90dB (IHF A-weighted, phono) Damping factor: 40 (8 ohms, 1kHz) Phono input sensitivity: 2.5mV (MM) Tuner section: FM / AM with 7-gang tuning capacitor FM sensitivity: 1.7µV (IHF) Dimensions: 597mm W × 184mm H × 471mm D Weight: 30kg (66 lbs) Year of manufacture: 1976–1978 Restoration Full service and recondition by Columbus Radio, Winnipeg All electrolytic capacitors inspected and replaced as required New LED lighting throughout — warm white, period-correct tone Replacement parts sourced and installed where necessary Bias and DC offset set to specification on all channels Output power verified at rated wattage on all channels All controls cleaned — no scratching, crackling, or dropout Phono stage, tuner, tone controls, and protection circuit confirmed operational Rarity & Collectibility Production numbers for the 2500 were limited relative to smaller models in the range. The combination of cost, size, and the logistics of shipping a 66 lb receiver meant that fewer were made and fewer survived in usable condition. A significant number were damaged by the very amplifier sections they contain — a fault-free, fully restored example at rated power is genuinely uncommon. Collectors on AudiogoN, Canuck Audio Mart, and US Audio Mart consistently note that properly restored 2500s command a premium and sell quickly when they surface. This one has been done correctly, by people who know what they are doing. Available for audition by appointment in Winnipeg. Shipping available — crating and freight at buyer's cost and arrangement.
